Who Is Liz Truss? 

Liz Truss, the British Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was born in Oxford, England, on July 26th, 1975.

Early Life

Liz Truss was born in Oxford, England, on July 26th, 1975. Her father was a school teacher, and her mother was an accountant. She attended Oxford University and studied history before working as a management consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers. After that, she worked as a financial journalist for several newspapers. In 2004, she became the director of international development at Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID) and later served as chief executive of UK Asian Aid from 2007-2012.


Liz Truss attended a grammar school before reading history at Oxford, earning a first-class degree. She then studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Cambridge University, achieving a First in this subject. After her studies, she became an economic advisor in the Department for Education and Skills under Tony Blair from 1997 until 2003. Following this, she was appointed as education secretary and minister for women and equalities in 2010 by David Cameron, a position she held until 2016.

She was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster on July 13th, 2016, by Theresa May.

In 2010 she became a Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Norfolk and entered government when David Cameron became Prime Minister 2010. From 2012-2016 she served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State within the Department for Education and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Liz Truss is a United Kingdom politician appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs in July 2016. She has also served as Minister for Women and Equalities since July 2014. Before that, she served in the coalition government as Economic Secretary, Lord Privy Seal, and the House of Lords Leader.  She was elected Conservative MP for South West Norfolk in 2010. That she holds with a majority of 18,049 votes or 34.3% share of the vote.
