Who is Hedy Lamarr?
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American film actress and inventor of wireless technology. She was born in 1914 in Vienna. As a child, Hedy Lamarr showed her interest in acting and was fascinated by theatre and film. In 1940, she was considered one of the most beautiful and great movie actresses. She also began to associate invention with her father, who would take her for a walk and explain how different technology functioned in society. She would spend a few hours in her trailer on the movie sets, testing and experimenting with the technology.
Frequency hopping was developed by Hedy with the American composer George Antheil. They would name it a secret communications system. It’s an intelligent way of switching between radio frequencies to avoid a signal being jammed. By manipulating this frequency at irregular intervals between transmission and reception, the invention formed an unbreakable code that could prevent secret messages from being cut off.
After receiving a patent for it from the government in 1942, she donated the technology to the US military to help guide torpedoes underwater without being detected. It was dismissed at the time. It would later use for a wide range of military purposes. Furthermore, It was the “spread spectrum” technology. She helped to invent that will form the basis of modern wireless communication technology that enables the mobile phone WIFI connections we take for granted today.
