If you’re unsure which place is best for you, check out some different travel sites to find one that offers deals and packages that are right for you. Be sure to stay informed about any promotional offers, too. Additionally, research ahead to see what activities and attractions might be worth visiting while you’re there! Finally, don’t forget–buying souvenirs or keeping up with your favorite TV show or celebrity via the Internet might be expensive overseas–but easy at home.

2) Avoid tourist traps

Tourist traps abound, and they usually only hurt your wallet. One of the worst tourist traps is the souvenir store. It’s great to take home something special from your trip, but try to resist the temptation of buying a t-shirt with your vacation destination’s name on it for $20. Don’t forget about the traditional postcard, either. You’ll feel satisfied when you send someone back home a piece of your experience from afar.

3) Get travel insurance

Dependable travel insurance is one of the most important things you can do before heading out for an extended trip. Don’tHowever, don’t take this precaution lightly; it’s not worth gambling with your health and safety.

4) Travel off-season

Most destinations experience lulls in tourism during certain times of the year. For example, cities like Bangkok in Thailand and Buenos Aires in Argentina are major tourist destinations that are not so popular among travelers from November to February. But don’t be discouraged–that time of year is perfect for finding deals. Also another great way to save money is by visiting off-season attractions like water parks or museums. For example, when I visited Detroit this past October, we could see everything at the Henry Ford Museum for free because it was free museum day!

5) Book in advance

Booking your flights in advance can save you money. Airlines usually offer better prices to those who buy their tickets well in advance so that you can save yourself hundreds of dollars by planning. Unfortunately, these deals tend to disappear within weeks of the date of purchase. 

If you’re flexible about your travel dates, try not to commit until as close to the day of departure as possible. Some airlines are now offering fares from or from only pricing options that may be more economical than buying from only. Other places that post last-minute discounts might be Groupon, Living Social, and Travelocity’s Last Minute Deals.

6) Or, in less touristy destinations, be spontaneous

#1 Don’t go to the same spot all the time. Going to the same area of town can get boring and increase your living costs. Instead, if you’re staying somewhere for an extended period, try switching up your routes to meet different people, see new scenery, or explore little corners of your town that you didn’t know existed. On top of getting variety in where you live or work, it’s also just as good for exploring yourself. 

#2 Research transportation beforehand: Take public transit whenever possible. If not possible, rent a bike for your commute instead of driving.

7) Find the cheapest flight deals

When you need to book a flight and travel on a budget, the challenge is finding the lowest possible fare. According to some research, if you’re booking at least three months in advance and are flexible with your travel date and departure city, there is almost always one sale going on somewhere that’s likely to be cheaper than most other options. However, if you cannot do these things but still want to save as much money as possible when booking flights, it can be helpful to search for the cheapest destinations in certain countries. This way, instead of limiting yourself by finding out what each airline is offering, you can focus on one or two airports within that country.

8) Fly mid-week

Don’t worry about booking the same airline every time. If you are flexible with your travel days, try to fly mid-week. The deals tend to be better and cheaper, and you will avoid unnecessary delays caused by high traffic.

9) Pack well

It’s easy to forget this step when you’re getting ready to travel. But packing well will help keep you refreshed and confident throughout your trip. When packing, consider what the weather will be like, what the country’s climate will be like, how long your stay will be and what activities you’ll do while traveling there. Then, pack appropriate clothing for your destination to easily take advantage of each time zone, whether it’s cold or hot outside.

Couchsurfing is the perfect way to explore different cultures without breaking the bank. You can meet great people and spend a lot less than you would at traditional hotels. If you eat out, consider taking lunch from home rather than ordering a sandwich at your desk. It’s also important to limit alcohol when socializing, so you don’t spend more than you have.

Start by talking to the locals. Everyone knows how to find deals in their neighborhood, and the locals know where all the low-key cool places are. Make sure you listen to them. Otherwise, they might not give you the best advice that they are giving others. Be sure to ask lots of questions; many locals are happy to share their secret spots.
