Most popular Operating Systems
The operating system is a program loaded into the computer by a boot program and manages all of the other applications in a computer. Most people use an operating system that comes in default with their computers. Also, it is possible to change or upgrade your OS. Today, the three most popular operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Furthermore, modern operating systems use a graphical user interface (GUI).
Microsoft Windows
Microsoft created it in the mid-1980. There are many different versions of Microsoft Windows, but the most recent ones are Windows 11 (2021), Windows 10 (2015), Windows 8 (2012), and Windows 7 (2009). Windows are most popular OS because it comes pre-loaded on new computers. It has a large number of users all over the world. So, that makes it most popular among the other operating systems.
macOS
Apple created it in 1984. macOS comes preloaded on all Macintosh computers. Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra are some specific versions of macOS. It is about 10% of the users, which is much lower than the Windows user (more than 80%) because Apple computers tend to be more expensive. So, many people prefer it over the windows.
Linux
Linux is an open-source operating system, which means it can be modified and distributed by anyone. It is different from Windows, which only be modified by the company that owns it. There are many versions and distributions of Linux that you can use for free. So, that makes it popular among others. In addition, if you want to know what version of Linux you are running on your computer, then you can use the cat /etc/os-release command. According to the report, there are almost 2% of Linux users all over the globe.
Hence, most servers run it because it’s relatively easy to customize.
Operating Systems for mobile devices
The operating systems that we have discussed run on desktops and laptops. Mobile phones differ from computers. The operating systems that run on mobile devices are Google Andriod and Apple IOS (run on iPhone or iPad).
OS for mobile generally does not contain many features like Windows, macOS, and Linux. But it has many same things.
