How to solve a Rubik’s Cube?

You’re not alone if you’ve ever wondered how to solve a Rubik’s cube. The idea of solving the cube puzzle can be frustrating and confusing, especially if it’s your first time trying. Fortunately, the solution to this issue isn’t hard to find when you know what to look for. In this article, we will show you exactly how to solve the Rubik’s cube puzzle step by step using only the official solver method invented by Professor Rubik.

A Brief History of the Rubik’s Cube

A Hungarian man, Erno Rubik, invented the cube back in 1974 while he was designing it as an academic tool for understanding three-dimensional objects. It became commercially available in 1980 and has since spawned hundreds of variations, but the original still seems to be the most popular.

To move any side of the cube, hold down that side with one hand and twist your other hand clockwise or counterclockwise so that your hand’s middle finger is pointing up, and then turn the top layer by putting your thumb on it and twisting counterclockwise or clockwise with your index finger. Repeat this step for all six faces (sides) until each is solved.

How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube: 7-Step Guide

Here are the seven following steps to solve a Rubik’s cube.

Step 1: Create White Cross

To begin solving the Rubik’s Cube, you’ll need to create the white cross, which is an X shape. This should take you less than three moves because there are only four different sides on a standard Rubik’s Cube. First, hold it so that the white face is at the bottom of your cross, then rotate one-quarter turn left so that the side with yellow faces is facing down and one of the red sides is facing up. Repeat this until all white faces are aligned in an X pattern.

Step 2: Solve White Corners

The first step to solving the puzzle is understanding how the colors work. The puzzle has six colors, and each color should only be on one side of the cube. Additionally, each corner should only be one color, with different sides being different colors. The most basic way to solve this problem is using what we call ‘the cross.’ This can be done by simply holding two opposite corners and then rotating it until all three remaining pieces of your desired color (in this case, white) are showing on top of their respective faces. However, this isn’t always a viable strategy because there may not always be an option for you to have two opposite corners and some other barriers in the way.

Simple Algorithm

  1. Match up two faces of the same color by turning one face clockwise and the other counterclockwise, switching when they become aligned.
  2. Repeat step 1 until all sides are aligned into one color.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 with the opposite colors (yellow and red).

Step 3: Solve Middle Layer

The top two layers of the Rubik’s Cube should now be solved. Next, it is time to focus on the middle layer of Rubik’s Cube. Recall that when you learned how to solve the middle layer, we used a clockwise pattern as follows: Corners (yellow), Edges (orange), and Lines (white). Now that your first layer has been solved, you will use these same steps only this time in reverse order. If you are turning clockwise when solving this layer. Then it will look like this: lines (white), edges (orange), and corners (yellow). You can still use the moves given in Section 3, but ensure they are performed in the right direction.

Step 4: Create Yellow Cross

The first step to solving the Rubik’s Cube is understanding the colors and their meaning. The colors of Rubik’s cube are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This color order is used when solving a puzzle. It makes it easy for people who know how to use duplication. The next thing you need to do is recognize where each color is on your puzzle.

The red and yellow colors are found at the bottom left of the cube. Next up, we have blue (bottom right), green (top right), orange (top middle), and finally violet, which is at the top left of the top face of your Rubik’s Cube. The last step in solving this addictive puzzle is putting your color on each spot!

Step 5: Swap Yellow Edges in Top Layer

  1. Hold the yellow-edge pieces with your left hand, and hold the top center edge piece in place with your right hand.
  2. Pull your left hand up and over the front of the cube (just as if you were solving an orange edge) while simultaneously pushing your right hand down over the back of the cube (just as if you were solving a white edge). Release all three pieces at once, so they land side by side on top of one another – except this time, you have swapped two of them.

Step 6: Position Yellow Corners

Keeping track of your starting location is essential when solving the Rubik’s Cube. If you find yourself in the corner, start with your yellow corner. In other words, if you are looking at your cube from the top or on its side, turn the red face so that it is next to its orange counterpart and do the same for blue and green. Hold up each face until they are aligned, then place them down in their solved position. Next, remove any edges by turning them inwards or outwards as needed until they fit into their opposite counterparts. Lastly, adjust the corners by turning clockwise or counterclockwise until all four are located in their solved position.

Step 7: Solve Final Layer Corners

This step is the most complicated and can be the hardest part of solving a Rubik’s Cube. It may take you more than one try! Be patient with yourself and have patience with this step. Some steps may require repeating moves multiple times for everything to line up.
